Vintage meets Versace in the blink of an eye .   .   .

Sure it can be done .   .   . hello, did you not just blink???

Before we move on, click on the photos for a real in your face, up close, in-depth, virtual sitting at the table view. Mmm hmm, that’s correct .   .   . tablecloth with no wrinkles, and  no creases. No siree!!! Nada!!! Zip!!! Zilch!!!

O k, so now that you’ve clicked, examined, oohed, and aahed .   .   .  or.  .   . hmmm, maybe not, it’s time to get to the nitty-gritty of actually creating a tablescape. The best way to create a ‘wow look‘ on your table, and have your crew want to sit down is .   .   . to start with one thing. That ‘thing’ can be anything from a colored vase, a textile remnant, a mix of bright pillows for your dining chairs (please no matchy-matchy), or a catch your breath tablecloth that just zaps you between your eyes, fills your heart, lifts your spirits above, and beyond the day to day, humdrum goings-on outside your door.

Having said all of the above, it’s time to get down to the brass tacks of constructing your next .   .   .  OMG… wowee… zowie, stop them in their tracks tablescape! The first ‘thing’ that I selected for this particular table, was the tablecloth shown above, because of its show stopper mix of colors. And well, truth be told, I just happen to have enough colored plates of mixed sizes in my stash of dishes to do the deed .   .   . If you read last weeks column, this little tid-bit should not come as any great surprise!!! (http://wp.me/p3E2rZ-jg) Anyway .   .   . moving on past ‘THE cloth’, and on to my little lovelies. I pulled plates with touches, and/or patterns that would co-habit, but not up stage ‘THE cloth’, while still having enough pop per place setting to get everyone’s heart rate into that much sought after euphoric zone of OMG…wowee…zowie… I always have soo much fun doing this .   .   . I liken this to unwrapping a boatload of presents at holiday .   .   . exclamation of delight!   .   .   . squeal! .   .   . I forgot all about you my lovely!!!

The place setting above is top layered with a Versace dinner plate, underneath a simple very inexpensive, slightly larger orange dinner plate, resting on top of a vintage ‘Moderne’ cobalt glass charger. Each place setting has a different mix of vintage, old, and new.

DSCN3969

They, (whoever ‘they’ are?) say don’t sweat the small stuff .  .  . I say don’t ignore the small stuff !!!! Because .   .   . it is all about the small stuff. One can not live by one tablecloth alone, no matter how amazing it may be. This is the part where imagination, patience, and a huge dose of out-of -the-box thinking comes into play. First, your not looking to set a table with the matchy-matchy .   .   . right??? Whether it’s plates, napkins, glasses, or utensils. Oh please take a breath, there are very few boundaries in creating visual fun. What we’re going for is the unexpected, whimsical, but bodacious that screams .   .   . well hellllo people .   .   . “Come sit with me for while, and see what I’m bringing to the table”. I know some of you out there in reader land, just said what’s with the “we’re going for”!? .   .   . The deal with the “we’re ” is because .   .   . we are in this journey together. Now a few of you are saying, ‘but what if I have a few questions’, and I say .   .   . I always welcome comments, and questions sent to my email address below. Listen I got you into this, and I am prepared to get you out!!!

Candle time everyone .   .   .  Featured in the above photo, is a 1940’ish vintage, cobalt blue glass baking dish (I have seen only one in my travels, and that was about 15 or so years ago), that I filled with new deep blue votive cups. This display sits on a wooden stool bought off of a Chinese man in China cleaning veggies .   .   . no kidding. The candles are t-lites housed in plastic holders, for easy clean up. Don’t forget to trim your wicks to between 1/4″ to 3/8″ before lighting each and every time. I added strategically placed clear votives around the table. Why clear instead of blue votives .   .   . It keeps the focus on the predominately cobalt blue center of this table popping!!! Clusters of 3 clear votives work best placed in front of each place setting, giving each guest that extra flattering tweak that keeps them coming back.

MORE CANDLE TIPS NEXT TIME.

I try squinting my eyes, in order to filter out Mother Nature’s yearly ritual. The ritual that inevitably takes place as summer gently comes to a close. Every year this gentle dance quietly begins to partake in one of Mother Nature’s yearly cycles. Yes, there will still be hot, sultry days, intermittently blended with hints of cooler days to come .   .   . of course! But, there is no mistaking the subtle introduction of crisper breezes, as the sun takes its nightly leave. As the warmth and carefree feeling of summer slowly fades into shortened daylight, I bring great news!!! What could be such great news? Now this is a positive question, since you have asked the one person (me), who can give you the real skivvy about transitioning from season to season, without being traumatized! Have you checked out the above photo yet? No? Hmm .   .   . And here I have always thought that pretty pictures trump the written word .   .   . lesson learned. So, the above photo has what I refer to as ‘transitional tablescaping’ .    .   . Stop .   .   . don’t go running to your dictionary, because the newly created phrase by me will not be in there. Whoa! Easy people. If a bunch of self proclaimed nerds sitting in a valley somewhere, can make up words and phrases .   .   . then I think all is fair in the world of creativity .   .   . right? Soooo .   .   . you say where does the transition come in? Ahhh .   .   . that’s an easy one. Just like the changing, and falling of the leaves, so comes the shifting of color ways. By accenting blue with crisp white napkins, the tablescape still remains summer like, with a hint of change on its way. The deeper shade of blue, as seen below, will now do double, and triple duty in the months to come.

IMG_7143

Now take a blue place setting, mix it up with dusty rose, or striped cream and charcoal, and watch the  transition to what I call the warmer tones. (Not to be confused with warmer weather). This mix is not as bright, and sunny, as the first photo, but one of softening tones, moving toward shorter daylight, and longer evenings. Evenings that demand dimmed lights, soft music, and long conversation by candlelight.

Ahhh .   .   . feeling romantic but sheltered in place?

Here is an easy-peasy fix that will definitely bring a little sparkle into your life.  Seriously. No joke. Push back your furniture and lay-claim to your picnic paradise!!! Throw a couple comforters, quilts or even beach towels on your floor. Oooooo the floor is to hard someone just said. Uh ah! Not if you pile on the pillows. Now it’s time to give your new ‘love island’ more razzle-dazzle .  .   . add string lights here, there and everywhere. A tray to hold your ice bucket and glasses. Hmmm. What’s left? Of course plates and plates of tasty morsels .   .   . soft easy-listening background music.

IMG_3432.jpg

Oh. Yes yes yes I hear you. It’s about the kids. O k no problem. Starting with the same basic layout as above but .   .   .  this island is geared for family fun. Before stepping on to this special ‘family-island’ each child needs to bring a game as their entrance fee that can be played while eating the super-duper sub-sandwhich seen below. Don’t forget to add  bowls filled with extra kid-friendly munchies to this party. The health crisis may take longer than a couple of weeks but with a little imagination you can just keep creating new unexplored islands.   Be Safe!!!!

They say .   .   . you positively, absolutely, must use a bowl to serve hummus?

IMG_0894 2.jpg

Since when? Who said that? Oh brother! Sheesh! Plllleeease people let’s get creative. How about  a remnant piece of marble, granite, sealed concrete, tile, or wood? Empty a good size quantity of hummus onto your remnant of choice. Next, with the back of a tablespoon gently sweep the hummus away from you creating a free-form  pattern, without pressing to deep. Or sweep the hummus from left to right in an arching motion, leaving a super looking fan. Now comes the fun creative stuff.

Try scattering shelled toasted pistachios, sesame seeds, chopped hot red peppers, and/or garbanzo beans. How about adding marinated-fire-roasted artichoke hearts, sliced healthy beets, chunks of cold radishes, or one of my fav’s fresh sliced peaches, nectarines, and pears. Mmmm. Yummmmmy! Wait while you’re at it .   .   . now would be a good time to use a pretty bowl filled with crudités.  Finish off this ‘delish’ nibbler with lavash, or toasted pita!

Yes, I could have used the bowls below for my hummus, but .   .   . geez talk about boring!

Can’t face yet another ho-hum-same-old plated meal? Well .   .   .  hang on.   .   . because here’s my summer solution.  .   . bowls, bowls, bowls!!!!!  I heard that snicker. I’ll wait for you to take a breath. People focus for a second. Thanks. I am always emphasizing presentation, presentation, presentation. Think of a bowl as a surprise treasure hunt. Hidden layers of delicious goodies just waiting to be discovered. Ahhhhhh finally. I just heard that quiet ahha from my ‘debbie-doubter’. It’s alright, I’m happy that you stuck around long enough to hear me out.

Now that I have your attention let’s take a second to remember that plate of spaghetti served-up on a flat plate. You know .  .   . the endless wrestling to prevent those loose-ends from ending on the table instead of your mouth!!! Not to mention your kids reaction to a real treasure hunt. All that they need to do is start eating to find the hidden goodies you have so cleverly tucked beneath the first or second layer of food. Aw come on .   .   . what have you got to lose? I’ll tell you what .   .   . that same-old flat plate of food!

I just can’t wait!!! I am telling you .   .   . the waiting is killing me! I hope that I’m not disappointed. I have crossed my fingers in hopes that July 4th fireworks will live up to last years. To give this years event a little bit of an edgy upscale vibe, I have decided to go with ‘4th in a box’. People easy .   .   . hang on, let me explain.  Sheesh!!! Rather than do the tried and true  4th of July bar-b-que.   .   . no, no, no .   .   . wait a second .   .  . I just heard someone say OMG .   .  . no old fashioned  bar-b-que ? Whoa .   .   .  it’s not the end of the world. So now that you all have lived through my crushing news of no bar-b-que, let’s move on. As you know, I am constantly trying to stretch my creativity, and in the process also tweak my friends’ anticipation of my new creations!!! This year is going to be a blanket celebration. Yes, yes,  you read it correctly. Sorry (giggling).   .   . I needed a moment to compose myself, because I just imagined the look on a few of your faces, and I think I heard one, or two of you gasp when the word blanket came out.

Furoshiki is the wonderful art of gift wrapping with fabric. Anything and everything can be bundled, into a square piece of cloth. From cotton to the most elegant of silks used for ceremonial kimonos, can be used. I am going to bundle each guest’s goodie bag of food into large square scarves. For the women each scarf is a different pattern, and will be large enough to use as a shawl while watching the fireworks, and take home as a party favor.  The men get an American flag ( also as a party favor), that can be taken home, hung afterwards or not. A big ice chest will carry the ice cold pauses that refresh, and blankets . The diagram below is pretty simple to follow. To close the opening (#4), slip one knotted end thru the other knotted opening, using the knotted one that you slipped thru much like a strap on a purse.  Have a SUPER, and SAFE  4th of July!!!

18960225-illustration-of-kids-giving-gift-to-mother-on-mother-s-day

There are many of us who have warm fuzzy feelings about our Mother’s Day memories. Now that my mom is no longer in the present I find that my need to express warm, fuzzy and loving feelings have found other deserving recipients. Why shouldn’t a daughter, granddaughter, niece, or a newly minted mother receive a few fun trinkets along with a bucket load of bravos, for what at times can and will be a daunting task of love .   .   . aka .   .   . learning to navigate through the minefield of motherhood.

One of my favorite celebrations, when I was a kid, was Mother’s Day. With all of the designated holidays throughout the year, why was this one so high up on my happy list? Easy question .   .   . simple answer. Mother’s Day always allowed me the perfect opportunity to create anything and everything that would show my mom just how very special and loved she was. Even as a young child my direction was always toward the light. The light of creativity of course. Give me a Kleenex and I would present her with a rose, a box of toothpicks would turn into a village. At three years old a needle, thread, and bits of fabric would always yield a new wardrobe for my doll. Well here I am .   .   . a few years later (Lol) .   .   . and still moving toward the light .   .   . of creativity. I give you a simple gift idea for Mother’s Day.  Yikes! Stop! Nobody panic! My suggestion does not require a needle and thread. But what it does require is a little bit of shopping. Yahoo! Come back! Wait .   .   . till I tell what your running off to shop for. Phew!  Take one plastic hard hat seen below, that can be found in any party store, and fill it with tons of pampering goodies that scream ‘you are special and deserve special.

*Shouted Marie Antoinette .   .   . or did she?

The kick-off of summer fun is close at hand. Semesters end is fast approaching, and for some, major milestones culminating with graduation ceremonies are but a mere breath away. For many, summer promises endless days of non-stop fun in the sun. A flip of the calendar page and backyard gatherings will be in full swing. Now I hear some whispering going on. Psst, psst, psst! I guess it is safe to say that you checked out the photo above. Mm hmm .   .   . yes, those are reeeal vintage glass dishes sitting on my wonderful floral patterned tablecloth! Yup, real silverware and linen napkins too! Holy moly you are correct again. Oh wow .   .   . I am besides myself with joy! You all are reallllly paying attention! Wait shhh .   .   . not done yet. Yes, I agree that those dishes seem mighty small for a barbecue. Lol! What can I say? Oh please people, take a breath and read on.

IMG_6026

For many, summer promises lazy-days filled with laughter shared with friends and family, gently morphing into warm star gazing nights long after glowing coals have  cooled. Wait! Hang on a second. Before you go star-gazing  .   .   . plleeeease focus your eyes on the photo above. Phew .   .   . I thought that I had lost some of you for a moment. Ahhh! Is that moaning and groaning  I am hearing? Don’t you agree, that something so scrumptious deserves a beautiful table to set it on. After all, one can not live by the stars alone!
